but to keep disbelief in perpetual suspension

an element of surprise, a diversion, a distraction

becomes a chain of lies and alibis

lies, lies, and alibis

impossible to undo this growing hostility

unable to think it through every possibility

never planning all these cries and heartbreak and pain

from a chain of lies and alibis
